History learning guide

History activities help children understand past and present, time order, historical objects and the ways we learn about earlier lives. The aim is not to memorise as many dates as possible, but to recognise that life changes over time and that evidence can come from objects, stories, photographs, buildings and written records.

What this practises

  • Use before, after, long ago, now and next to practise chronological thinking.
  • Compare older and newer objects by function, material or how people used them.
  • Ask where a historical story comes from and what evidence supports it.

Continue offline

Make a small timeline about family life or one day, from waking up to bedtime. Older children can examine an old household object or family photograph and describe visible changes without inventing details that are not known.

Adapt the activity to the child’s age and readiness. If the child becomes tired or loses interest, stop and return another time.
